Two members of the Tandem Team, and the 82nd All American Freefall Team put on a aerial demonstration for the 555th Parachute Infantry Regiment “Triple Nickle” alumni on September 9, 2010.
The jump was a stack out formation, with SFC Mike Elliott leading the team in freefall. SFC Mike Elliott is also a lifetime member of the 555th Parachute Infantry Association the “Triple Nickle”. The jumpers put on the performance flawlessly, and wowed the crowd with their precision canopy piloting skills.
Each jumper was honored to be able to jump for the pioneers of airborne operations. After the jump the team met with members of the “Triple Nickle” organization for pictures, and to learn the history of the 555th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion was nicknamed the “Triple Nickles” because of its numerical designation and the selection of 17 of the original 20-member “African American test platoon” from the 92nd Infantry (Buffalo) Division. The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, or “Triple Nickles,” succeeded in becoming the nation’s first All-Black parachute infantry test platoon, company, and battalion.
