The US Army Golden Knights Competition Team made a strong showing this weekend at the 2011 Indoor Skydiving Championships hosted by the Paraclete XP wind tunnel in Raeford, NC. The Knights competed in the 4way and 8way Formation Skydiving categories.
Saturday consisted of 8 rounds of 4way followed by 8 rounds of 8way. 16 rounds of competition in one day require a high degree of physical and mental endurance. The Golden Knights’ Gold 4way Team finished the day in 3rd place, while the 8way Team sat atop the leader board after 8 rounds.
Going into the final 2 rounds on Sunday, the GK Gold 4way Team found themselves in a very tight race for 2nd place. After the two final rounds, GK Gold remained in 3rd place with a total 263 points in 10 rounds, 1 point behind the 2nd place team, Paraclete XP4. The 3rd place finish for the GK Gold 4way Team is impressive considering their very limited 4way training; however, the GK Competiton Team will be dedicating more time to 4way training this year.
The GK 8way Team maintained their first place standing throughout the 10 round competition, finishing with 281 points, 42 points ahead of the 2nd place team. While wind tunnel competitions typically yield higher scores than actual skydives, the 281 points scored by the GK 8way Team is the highest score achieved by an 8way team in a 10 round competition. GK 8way Team members were pleased with the performance and are looking forward to a great year of competition skydiving.
