Golden Knights are Soldiers first, continuously training to excel in the air…and also on the ground. Team members strive for excellence in all aspects of being a good Soldier, and compete and train not only in skydiving, but in other sports as well.
Four members from the Golden Knights (SGT Brandie Phillips, SSG Howard Sanborn, SFC Robert Mooney and CPT Ben Terwilliger) completed the Club Med Triathlon race #1 in Port Saint Lucie, FL over the weekend. The sprint triathlon consisted of a 500 meter swim, a 12 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run. The Golden Knight Team members who participated medaled in their respective age groups and placed well overall.
CPT Terwilliger finished sixth in the male first timers group with an overall time of 1:17:57, and had the fastest three mile run time within that group. SFC Mooney finished first in the male 35 to 39 age group with an overall time of 1:03:59. SSG Sanborn laid down a blistering time of 59:12. This allowed him to finish 2nd in the male 25 to 29 age group. SGT Phillips placed first in the female 20 to 24 age group with a overall time of 1:18:53. She completed the bike portion of the race like a champ, powering through with a flat tire the last six miles.
The race was sponsored by Club Med and race director Tom Oneill was very supportive of the military by waiving the entrance fee to the Team members.
After the race, the triathletes returned to the hotel and enjoyed the Super Bowl with the rest of the Golden Knights. The owner of the extended stay lodgings that house the Team supplied a large screen television and stereo that was set up outside the hotel. The entire Team enjoyed the game, wings and great stories of the past few weeks.
